Unpredictably Dull
This sign is now down, and they are advertising the GAP again.
The news crews have cleared away. (If you look closely you can see a KCAL satellite truck through the scratched up bus window.)With only two out of five, I didn't win the family Oscar Competition, so the yummy chocolate brownies will not come my way. Though disappointing, this is probably a good thing since I'm watching my sugar intake.
Other predictions that didn't pan out? The rain stopped well before the evening event. And I never imagined how boring I'd find this year's telecast. Snore.
I always look forward to watching the Oscars, even when I haven't seen the films. I love the touching speeches, the surprise wins, and the crackling tension that runs through the nominees as the evening goes on.
But this year that just didn't happen for me. Perhaps it was because I DVR'd it (I got home from work after it started), I didn't feel the rush of excitement I usually get while watching the event live. Also, my view--apparently the minority--was that Jon Stewart was bleh. He didn't relate to the audience at the Kodak, except for a few asides about the baby bumps, and I didn't find him very funny. And more than ever before it just felt like one very long drawn out fashion show. B-o-r-i-n-g.
Not too many poignant moments either, except for the predictable In Memoriam montage (yes, I cried when Heath looked up from under that hat).
My vote for the best moment goes to Best Song co-winner, Marketa Irglova, who was allowed to come back out onto the stage for her speech after they cut her off.
"The fact that we're standing here tonight, the fact that we're able to hold this, it's just proof that no matter how far out your dreams are, it's possible," Irglova said during take two. "And, you know, fair play to those who dare to dream, and don't give up. This song was written from the perspective of hope, and hope, at the end of the day, connects us all, no matter how different we are."I can't hear that too often.
I was very thrilled that Diablo Cody won for best original screenplay. But otherwise I didn't feel an emotional investment in the outcome.
My prediction on the length of the show was way off too. My DVR cut off the recording right before they announced the winner for Best Actor. So, while the DH and I were blaming each other for what went wrong, Tech Support dug around on YouTube to find clips of the last few awards.
Maybe next year I'll wait until it's all on YouTube, where you can usually find the bits worth watching pared away from the bits worth skipping.
Hmmm. Maybe they'll have Ellen back to do the Oscars some time.

I agree it was not a thrilling night, Jon Stewart just doesn't have the glitz. I was happy for Marion Cotillard in "La Vie en Rose" . That was a surprise as everyone thought it would be Julie Christie.
